An Underestimated Important Discovery of 66 Years: The Tomb of Zhang Sheng from the Sui Dynasty in Anyang (Part 2)
2025-08-25
This article focuses on the sculptures unearthed from Zhang Sheng's tomb, which are mainly figurines, but also include a small number of animal sculptures.
The types of figurines unearthed from Zhang Sheng's tomb are diverse, primarily including warrior figurines, attendant figurines, musician figurines, and white clay figurines of foreigners. There are two warrior figurines, each wearing a helmet with a protruding crest, adorned with bright armor, a sash around the waist, and loose-fitting trousers. The entire body is coated with white glaze, which appears slightly blue in thicker areas, reflecting the historical connection between Sui Dynasty white porcelain and blue-and-white porcelain.
There are also two attendant figurines, wearing small caps, round-necked wide-sleeved robes, overlaid with chain mail, sashes around their waists, boots on their feet, and swords in both hands on lotus pedestals. They are covered in white glaze with black decorations on their caps, hair, eyebrows, and eyes, creating a striking contrast between black and white that highlights their artistic expressiveness.
Two tomb guardians, each approximately 50–56 centimeters in height, feature a human face and animal body design, with three tufts of flame-shaped mane and a spear on their backs. Their form inherits the crouching posture characteristic of tomb guardians from the Northern Wei period in Luoyang, with the entire figure in a crouching position, front limbs upright and rear limbs bent, resting on a rectangular base. The entire body is covered in white glaze, with black enamel dots decorating the top of the head, eyebrows, eyes, and joints of the front limbs, creating a striking contrast and showcasing a unique artistic style.
The 13 musical and dance figurines (8 musical figurines and 5 dance figurines) are important materials for studying music in the Sui Dynasty. They are 17-19 cm tall, with flat buns on their heads, wearing narrow-sleeved tunics and high-waisted skirts with striped patterns, and holding instruments such as the pipa, konghou, and xiao, with expressions of intense concentration as they play. Their robes were originally colored green, brown, red, and yellow, providing crucial physical evidence for the study of the Sui Dynasty's seated musical ensemble system.。
